It shares the main pillars of the successful after-school literacy and tutoring program run by the Kwanlin Dun First Nation in Whitehorse. Information is shared about: relationship-building, a welcoming and flexible learning environment, cultural awareness, tutor recruitment, liaisons in schools, acknowledging trauma, fostering literacy, and building self-esteem.The goal is to create a welcoming learning environment for students. The document provides guidance to educators and is easily adaptable to respond to needs of Indigenous students anywhere. Educators are encouraged to involve Elders and include local Indigenous languages as much as possible.
