We recognize there are many videos with Elders and Knowledge Holders that can be found on the web. The videos in this catalogue relate to one or more of the topics listed here and are just a sampling. We also recognize that not all Indigenous Peoples in Canada are found in this catalogue. YouTube, TedX, Vimeo, as well as the NCCIE website (among others), have been searched extensively for possible videos to add to this catalogue. Every effort has been made to find videos with knowledge being shared from as many different Peoples as possible. Some Peoples have made a conscious effort to keep their knowledge in an oral form and separate from the digital world, staying true to original ways of passing on knowledge from one generation to the next – in person, through ceremonies and experiences over years of learning.

NCCIE encourages you to reach out to the Peoples who live in your area, and following cultural protocols, seek to develop respectful relationships to understand how to learn more.

To begin this project, protocols were followed to meet with Elders and seek their guidance. Efforts to develop this searchable database focused on finding videos pertaining to cultural knowledge on one or more of the topics listed here. So as not to duplicate repositories of videos found elsewhere on the internet, certain topics have not been included. For example, if you are interested in finding videos about residential schools or reconciliation, please visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

Before videos were added to this catalogue, they were reviewed by Elders and Knowledge Holders familiar with the particular cultural group represented in the video. The Elders and Knowledge Holders who reviewed the videos were asked to address two questions:

1. Is the Elder’s or Knowledge Holder’s story an accurate reflection of the culture or Indigenous Knowledge of the group?
2. Would you recommend the video to a student who was interested in learning about the culture represented in the video?
