The Language Revitalization Program is very new and will entail learning activities for silent speakers (those who understand but don’t speak fluently), immersion for babies-children-adults, and is being planned and facilitated by Fran Brown in Bella Bella BC.
The Language Revitalization Program is very new and will entail learning activities for silent speakers (those who understand but don’t speak fluently), immersion for babies-children-adults, and is being planned and facilitated by Fran Brown. Fran Brown has 15 years of experience teaching the Heiltsuk Language within the local community school and has successfully adapted teaching techniques to suit the local children. She has recently been hired to create and run the Language Revitalization Program in Bella Bella BC and is excited about combining and connecting programs delivered by local organizations to ensure the future of the Heiltsuk Language.
This program has the potential for success within revitalization of a language that is close to being part of the past. The resilience of the Heiltsuk teachers and learners can contribute to the future of other languages across Canada.
Please note: The quality of the audio and video in each interview on NCCIE.CA may vary. NCCIE has been a capacity- and skills-building project for students and youth. They have been "learning-through-doing," learning how to arrange and conduct interviews while, at the same time, gaining experience with the technology.
