Introduction and Traditional Opening
Dr. Don McCaskill (Regional Lead for southeastern Ontario), Dr. Kevin Fitzmaurice (Regional Lead for northeastern Ontario), and Dr. Leisa Desmoulins (Regional Lead for northwestern Ontario), co-authors of this virtual guide, provide self-introductions, an overview of the resource guide and its purpose and use for classroom teachers. Resource Guide Overview
Leisa Desmoulins introduces the virtual Teacher’s Resource Guide as a step-by-step handbook for teachers new to Indigenous education. Produced by the NCCIE, the five chapters are set up as a how-to handbook and a series of video playlists to build teachers’ knowledge as they work through the guide. The purpose of the guide is for teachers to develop their confidence, abilities, and capacities in delivering lessons with Indigenous content via video explanations of resources, exemplars, and lesson plans.
History of the NCCIE
Dr. Mark Dockstator, former president of First Nations University and founder of NCCIE, highlights the development of the NCCIE project and website. Mark explains the origin of the NCCIE name, the intent of the video stories, the creation of the website and the NCCIE logo, as well as the transition to the larger scale NCCIE project through funding to support researchers across Canada.
Integrating Indigenous Content into the Classroom
Dr. Nicole Bell shares key insights that ground all five chapters of this guide in Indigenous education principles. She discusses terms and issues that may arise for teachers who seek to infuse Indigenous content into their classroom. She addresses the fear that teachers may feel about making a mistake and the discomfort that emerges. She encourages teachers to work through their discomfort to reach clarity and to build capacity.
Navigating the NCCIE Website
Dr. Jennifer Dockstator, the NCCIE Project Director, models how to navigate the NCCIE website. Jennifer highlights how to search for lesson plans and videos and explains the various sections found on each lesson plan and the associated resources available on the NCCIE website. Leisa Desmoulins concludes Chapter 1.
