Kelly Anne Butler is the Aboriginal Affairs Counsellor at Memorial University (Grenfell Campus). She discusses the school’s Wampum Belt Initiative of traditional and cultural knowledge sharing. Traditionally, Wampum belts were culturally significant pictoral descriptions of community events, stories, treaties, and culturally significant symbols. Intimately tied to the language, descriptions of the belts, including orally telling a belt’s stories in the language, are revealing of the cultural symbology and traditions passed down.
