Valerie Matthews is a Mi’kmaw Language Teacher at the Maupeltuewey Kin’matno’kuom School, Membertou First Nation, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The program’s aim is to revitalize the Mi’kmaw language. Students from Grades 1 to 8 are taught through a variety of experiential and play-based learning, songs, and stories. Students are gaining a deeper appreciation of the Mi’kmaw culture, self-identity, and emotional expressiveness through the application of the Mi’kmaw language.
