Wiseman Mathematics Contest

A national mathematics contest for Indigenous youth on reserves in Grades 4-6.

Dr. Arzu Sardarli is an Associate Professor of Physics and Mathematics in the Department of Indigenous Science, The Environment, and Economic Development at First Nations University of Canada. Since 2008, Dr. Sardarli has been leading Math contests for students between Grades 4-6 who are living on-reserve. Supported by their teachers, up to five hundred students compete each year from reserve schools between British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. The competition is strong. Students finishing in first, second, and third place receive certificates of participation and the first-place winner becomes that year’s national winner. Dr. Sardarli believes that this competition builds a network of students and teachers who are connected around this topic.

Coyote Kids Weekly Program is a free weekly Aboriginal culture program for Aboriginal children or children of Aboriginal ancestry ages of 6-12 years. Coyote kids meets every Monday evening from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. It operates from September to June. Registration takes place in mid-September each year. The program is full every year with a maximum of 35 children. The program is free and relies on donations or fundraising to fund the program. We are staffed by the Coyote Pride Program Coordinators and have parent volunteers, Junior Leaders or people from the community who volunteer to help with the programming and supervision.

The Digital Lodge project is a multi-year project in Thompson, Manitoba that works with the same group of students from grade 7 until grade 12. It is part of the larger Educating for Action project that also includes resource support by a project-dedicated teacher, as well as culturally relevant land-base education. Over the seven years of the project we are introducing various aspects of filmmaking to the youth, such as documentary, animation and dramatic filmmaking. The aim of the project is for the youth to find their own voice and learn to express themselves through the medium of film and video. The key to the success of the project is its long-term nature where the participating artists have been able to develop trust and friendships with the youth and the community.

A group of learners in Lutsel K’e got a taste of just how hard their ancestors worked to clothe themselves at a first-time traditional moosehide tanning camp last week.

“When I’m doing moosehide tanning, I often think, ‘yeah I’m doing one, it’s so hard, but what if I had to do 10 just to make sure that my family had the clothing that they needed to stay warm?’” said Stephanie Poole, a community member in Lutsel K’e who participated in the tanning camp. “It gives you a real appreciation for all of the work that our ancestors did.”

Around 10 to 15 people took part in the 10-day camp, some of whom slept on-site while others trekked out to the campsite each day, located near the townsite at the outlet to Stark Lake river.  https://norj.ca/2014/06/lutsel-ke-traditions-kept-alive-with-tanning-camp/

Flower Beadwork Circle Manitoba Métis Federation

The Métis have often been called “The Flower Beadwork People” – a nickname attributable to their extraordinary floral beadwork designs, which are well-known in Métis culture.

The Louis Riel Institute (LRI) has continued this tradition through The Flower Beadwork Circle, a group that meets every Wednesday evening to keep the craft alive. During these meetings, members work on individual beading projects and share their knowledge and ideas for beading ideas, patterns, and techniques.
