Tumikuluit Saipaaqivik

Tumikuluit Saipaaqivik is Iqaluit’s Inuktitut only daycare that provides childcare services using Inuktitut as the language of communication as well as cultural education. Empowering Native Indigenous Tribes (ENIT) Through Cognitive Experiential Immersion

Roger White Jr. leads the Empowering Native Indigenous Tribes (ENIT) project, which aims to create awareness about different approaches to experiential learning.

Roger White Jr., otherwise known by his Assiniboine name, “Little Eagle”, teaches Native American Studies at Frazer High School in Frazer, Montana. Prior to teaching he worked at the Native Children’s Trauma Centre at the University of Montana. During this work, he learned that Western approaches to treating children’s trauma often had minimal impact on Indigenous children. He decided to look into what Indigenous children needed and he began logging qualitative data on behaviour and competency of Indigenous children. The insights from the data combined with learning about Total Physical Response (TPR), a method of teaching language that coordinates language with physical movements such as hand signs, led to the creation of a project called, Empowering Native Indigenous Tribes (ENIT). Roger White Jr. believes that it is the experiential component of education that causes a long lasting memory. The focus of ENIT’s work is around cognitive experiential immersion and this concept of learning by experience can be implemented by different approaches – TPR is an example.

PWK High School Sweetgrass Culture Camp

All grade 7 and 8 students attend this fall culture camp in Wood Buffalo National Park. Here they learn land-based skills, canoe safety, traditional medicines and much more. This camp is supported by the local school board and community.

Northern Cultural Expressions Society Art Education Program

This transformational program allows First Nations mentors/Master Carvers to go into Yukon schools and educate all students about traditional art forms and more.

The Art Education Program is for school aged children from Kindergarten to Grade 12. This transformational program allows First Nations mentors/Master Carvers to go into Yukon schools and engage with all students (First Nations and Non), in order to educate them about traditional art forms. Along with this, students also learn more about the traditions, the history and stories behind carving. The Little Métis Sing With Me program offers resources for facilitators, parents, and children. The resources include songs, rhymes, dance, Michif language, take-home books, and crafts.

Little Métis Sing With Me program is a parent-child program with three strands: Family literacy Essential skills Métis culture and history This is an exciting program with lots of wonderful resources for facilitators to share with parents and children: songs, rhymes, dance, Michif language, take home books, crafts, and guests. Little Métis Sing With Me Training Workshop A three-day workshop to train participants to run their own Little Métis Sing With Me programs. All participants receive a facilitator’s manual and all resources. Also included are a combination of dance, songs, rhymes, books, and activities to enhance the training and provide ready-made resources for the program. Registration fee is $125 per person or $2,500 for your group (max 20 participants). Neecheewam Inc. goes beyond pedagogical programs in an effort to redefine concepts of treatment, emphasizing cohort and peer education through an “extended family” that results in whole person learning. Whole person learning requires moving beyond the text book to include academic, professional, emotional, and spiritual growth.

Aurora College-Inuvik: Student Life and Wellness

Aurora College’s Inuvik campus has two large McPherson tents where a variety of activities take place. Elementary schools, high schools, Elders, and community members use this space. Some activities include medicine walks, fish camps, and story-telling.

BushKids

BushKids is exploring the ethical space between Indigenous education and Western education principles in Yellowknife, NT.

BushKids co-founders are both trained as forest and nature school practitioners. Chloe Dragon Smith is a Dënesųłiné – Metis woman from Yellowknife, who grew up learning on-the-land through the Indigenous education principles of her family. Wendy Lahey is a non-Indigenous educator trained in the Western education system and has lived in the north for a long time. The two women are committed to working with the community, as possible, to create a curriculum that equally honours these systems of teaching and learning on the land.

The goal of BushKids is ultimately to affect the public education system and ensure all northern students spend regular time on the land throughout the school year. Programming is currently offered throughout the school year for pilot classes of all ages, from early childhood to high school. BushKids educators also work with teachers in public education systems with the goal of enabling them to bring their classes outside as part of their learning.
