Dechinta’s model of program delivery is innovative and responsive to the needs of diverse learners. We offer a setting where families can learn together through our Chekoa Nı̨ htł’èkǫ ̨̀ Deè (KidsU) program where children are invited to attend semesters with their parent(s) and learn on the land. This has become one of the most vital components of our Dechinta model as many students, particularly single mothers, opt to bring their children with them, thus providing a platform for strengthening family bonds.

Dene Nahjo Urban Hide Tanning

Urban Hide Tanning in Somba K’e

Dene Nahjo’s Annual Urban Hide Tanning Camp is a reclamation of urbanized space in the heart of Somba K’e. They host a two week long camp in Somba K’e park, where guests are invited to witness or participate in hide tanning. There are Elders and experienced hide tanners available to mentor learners and share stories. Thousands of people have passed through Dene Nahjo’s Urban Hide Tanning Camp, including many students and hide tanning learners. This camp is an Indigenous safe space for us, as Indigenous people, to learn, have fun, make mistakes, make relationships and be vulnerable.

Creating Leaders in First Nations Gaming

Assistant Professor, Joanne Goodpipe offers courses that create leaders in hospitality, tourism, gaming, and entertainment.

Joanne Goodpipe is an Assistant Professor of Business in the Department of Indigenous Science, The Environment, and Economic Development at First Nations University of Canada, Regina Campus. Goodpipe teaches a five-course certificate program which deals with: hospitality, tourism, and entertainment management; marketing; human resources; commercial gaming; and strategic management. These courses are designed with Indigenous content, examples, and case studies, which are available to both industry and university students who, she hopes, will become proud Indigenous leaders and managers in First Nations gaming. Full classes are indicators of success and Goodpipe believes that offering this program helps to build stronger communities.

Le Centre des Premières Nations Nikanite (CPNN) de l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi oeuvre depuis 1991 à assurer la formation universitaire de communautés des Premières Nations. Il s’agit d’une organisation offrant divers programmes d’études aux étudiants autochtones, tels qu’en administration, en arts et culture, en éducation, en intervention et en langues. L’équipe de CPNN propose également différents services, dont un soutien pédagogique, et des ressources permettant d’assurer l’insertion de jeunes Autochtones aux études universitaires. L’équipe a à coeur la réussite scolaire et l’épanouissement personnel des étudiants et demeure ainsi à l’écoute de leurs besoins. Le centre a d’ailleurs pour objectif la valorisation identitaire et le rayonnement culturel des membres des Premières Nations. Le Centre des Premières Nations Nikanite est un lieu accueillant, et représente un milieu de vie pour les étudiants. Son équipe travaille continuellement au développement de formations universitaires et de programmes qui répondent aux besoins, aux attentes et aux réalités des étudiants autochtones. Il agit également à la sensibilisation de la communauté universitaire à la culture des Premières Nations du Québec et prône le respect envers les Premières Nations. En 2017, le Centre Nikanite partagea avec quelques autres organismes et personnalités le prix Droits et Liberté 2017 de la Commission des droits de la personne et de la Jeunesse, démontrant ainsi l’excellence de leur initiative.

Intersections of Indigenous Education and Chemistry at First Nations University of Canada

Vincent Ziffle incorporates Indigenous ways of knowing into his 100 level Chemistry courses at the First Nations University of Canada.

Assistant Professor, Vincent Ziffle, from the Department of Indigenous Science, the Environment, and Economic Development (DISEED) at First Nations University of Canada, discusses the intersections of Chemistry and Indigenous education. Ziffle explains how organic, introductory, and general chemistries can be explored experientially in classrooms, on the land, or in the kitchen. The chemistry of medicinal plants or the chemistry of food and cooking offers a high degree of traditional knowledge integration into the course. For Ziffle, Indigenous education incorporates traditional ways of knowing, traditional ecological knowledge, and involves working with and learning from Elders. Ziffle hopes to provide all students opportunities to understand chemistry, at least the basics, where principles are learned experientially enriching our lives to better understand our world.

The First Nations University of Canada, the University of Regina, and the University of Saskatchewan partner with Let’s Talk Science, a national non-profit organization whose volunteers work with classrooms or community groups to connect them to science, technology, engineering, and mathematic learning experiences. Tipi Raising Program at Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Director of Programming at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Teena Nelson, teaches students, families, and visitors about the cultural significance of the tipi within First Nations culture.

The Tipi Teachings Program is a hands-on experience for participants to learn about the importance of the tipi in First Nations culture. Insight into the traditional lifestyle and worldview of the Plains Cree is gained by learning about tipi poles, structure, and history. There are linkages between Social Studies, Science, and Math curriculum that can be explored when raising a tipi. The Verna J. Kirkness Science and Engineering Education Program

“Increasing the number of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students graduating from science and engineering programs in Canada.”

The Verna J. Kirkness Science and Engineering Education Program prepares Indigenous students to graduate within the sciences. In 2018, the program was held at First Nations University of Canada in Regina, SK. Scholarships are awarded to Indigenous Grade 11 students who are invited to spend one week at universities from across western Canada. Students participate in hands-on laboratory research with scientists and engineers to learn about the area of study, to learn about possible role models, and to learn about the support systems available on campus.
