Urban Circle is a community organization operating in the North End neighborhood of Winnipeg. Urban Circle takes a holistic attitude towards education, working with its stakeholders to achieve its goals, and prioritizes engagement with its elders.

Donna Lerat teaches early learners their Cree identity through language and music at the K’Awasis Daycare.
Donna Lerat is the Director of the K’Awasis Daycare on Cowesses First Nation, Saskatchewan. She has observed her community lose their cultural identity and language. At the Daycare, Lerat has implemented an Indigenous language and cultural protocols program for early learners to age twelve. By introducing young people, and the daycare staff, to Cree language and traditions, Lerat hopes to be part of the change whereby young people learn Cree, and learn, not just how to, but why they practice Cree cultural protocols and traditions. Cree language recordings and music are played throughout the day and children practice vocabulary related to numeracy, months, animals, basic words, and phrases related to greetings. Opportunities to engage early learners in Cree language acquisition will better equip them to learn Cree in school settings and that success will, hopefully, make them proud and confident Cree language speakers.

L’Institut Tshakapesh, qui se situe à Uashat, est un organisme culturel et éducatif qui dessert, depuis près de trente-cinq ans, huit communautés innues de la Côte-Nord. L’Institut a pour mission de préserver la langue et la culture innu et oeuvre à favoriser la réussite scolaire des jeunes des communautés membres. Pour se faire, l’Institut Tshakapesh propose des activités d’échange et de perfectionnement en impliquant les parents dans l’éducation de leurs enfants. L’Institut valorise également « le maintien des traditions, la fierté culturelle, le respect d’autrui et l’entraide », des valeurs devant être transmises aux générations futures. (Institut Tshakapesh, 2013) L’Institut Tshakapesh offre, en collaboration avec les écoles membres, plusieurs programmes en éducation. On y retrouve notamment le programme « Agir tôt/Uipat Tutetau » qui valorise l’engagement des parents et de la collectivité dans l’éducation des jeunes et dans la réussite scolaire des élèves. Le programme « Agir tôt » favorise une meilleure préparation des étudiants à leur arrivée à l’école primaire. Pour ce faire, il permet un dépistage précoce des besoins spéciaux des jeunes. Il permet le développement global des enfants par l’utilisation de matériels adaptés et par l’apprentissage par le jeu. Ce programme prend la forme d’ateliers d’implication parentaux pour lesquels des capsules vidéos ont été produites. Ces capsules sont accompagnées de fiche d’activité afin que les parents puissent mieux soutenir le développement de leurs enfants. Le programme « Agir tôt » a finalement pour objectif de favoriser l’égalité des chances chez les jeunes.

La bibliothèque Maskwa (“écorce de bouleau” en abénaki) est implantée dans la communauté abénakise de Wôlinak (en Mauricie). Elle a rouvert ses portes en 2017, sous la gestion du Grand Conseil de la Nation Waban-Aki. Comme la communauté ne possède pas d’écoles la bibliothèque offre un espace éducatif (sélection de livres, diffusion de documentaires, service d’aide aux devoirs…) ouvert aux personnes de tous âges. En complément avec le projet Niona, équipe-jeunesse d’intervention intergénérationnelle de Wôlinak qui s’intéresse à la culture abénakise, la bibliothèque développe un répertoire de ressources culturelles afin de permettre aux jeunes de la communauté d’en apprendre davantage sur leurs origines. Maskwa est également le lieu de développement des compétences professionnelles par l’entremise de stages offerts aux jeunes abénakis.

Implanté en 2003 au Centre d’amitié autochtone de Val-d’Or, le Club des Petits Loups Mohiganech (en algonquin, qui signifie « petit loup ») vise les enfants âgés entre 6 et 12 ans, en leur apportant un soutien social et par le renforcement de leur capacité d’apprentissage. De par une approche holistique, ce service communautaire mise sur le développement personnel et des habiletés des enfants autochtones ainsi que de leurs familles. Pour ce faire, des activités culturelles, sociales et éducatives, dans un milieu de vie favorable au développement d’une fierté et d’une identité culturelle, leur sont proposées. Ce service, offert en langues française et anglaise, offre,non seulement de l’aide aux devoirs, mais aussi des activités d’éveil à la lecture et à l’écriture, des activités de littératie familiale, des activités de soutien aux parents dans le cheminement scolaire de leur(s) enfant(s) et de prévention du décrochage scolaire. Le Club des Petits Loups contribue au développement d’un sentiment d’appartenance des enfants à leur culture. Il contribue également chez les enfants au développement de leur estime de soi, d’attitudes positives face à l’école ainsi qu’au renforcement du lien entre l’école et la famille.
