Matawa Learning Centre

The Matawa Learning Centre uses a holistic approach to education in order to help young Indigenous learners from the Matawa Communities in Northern Ontario.

The program has educators that help students achieve graduation as well as cultural support, mental health workers, nutrition workers, physical activity coordinators, and around the clock workers to help support the youth in a wrap-around approach that centres the learner’s well-being.

Indigenous Education And Native Studies in Denendeh. A university on the land. Land based university program that takes its organizing principles and knowledge largely from indigenous knowledge. Dechinta works with works elders, community members/experts, cultural teachers to offer university courses that value indigenous knowledge as much as academic.

The Verna J. Kirkness Science and Engineering Education Program

“Increasing the number of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students graduating from science and engineering programs in Canada.”

The Verna J. Kirkness Science and Engineering Education Program prepares Indigenous students to graduate within the sciences. In 2018, the program was held at First Nations University of Canada in Regina, SK. Scholarships are awarded to Indigenous Grade 11 students who are invited to spend one week at universities from across western Canada. Students participate in hands-on laboratory research with scientists and engineers to learn about the area of study, to learn about possible role models, and to learn about the support systems available on campus.

Indigenous Mentors run On the Land Programs with all ages. These programs reinforce traditional/cultural land use practices, skills and survival techniques. Programs are centred around seasonal changes in hunting and harvestings practices. Story Sharing, Oral teachings and Spiritual Practices are important aspects in Indigenous values, systems, beliefs.
