Urban Circle is a community organization operating in the North End neighborhood of Winnipeg. Urban Circle takes a holistic attitude towards education, working with its stakeholders to achieve its goals, and prioritizes engagement with its elders.

Cultural Resource Coordination

The programs at the Niagara Regional Native Centre work together and Philip works to raise cultural awareness and foster wellbeing on a community and individual level.

Philip Davis is the Cultural Resource Coordinator for the Niagara Regional Native Centre and this program provides Indigenous educational services, that are focused on providing children, youth, family and community access to cultural knowledge. This is done through a variety of approaches with the aim to foster wellbeing and positive Indigenous Identity. Music is a tool that Davis uses to pass on cultural knowledge with regular drum nights. An exploration of colonial history is an important element in self-discovery which empowers individuals to learn about who they are and where they come from.

Additionally, Davis coordinates learning experiences for outside agencies (churches, community services, etc.) about Indigenous history, colonialism, and residential schools. These services help to raise awareness and to reduce racism.

Exploring Life Experiences and Lessons with Clayton Paul Episkenew

Clayton Paul Episkenew shares his experience as a survivor of residential schools and alcoholism. He uses these experiences to help inmates at the Regina Correctional Centre. 

Born in Fort Qu’Appelle in the late 1940’s, Clayton Paul Episkenew lived in a mud shack built by his father, who was very proud to have built a home for his family. When Clayton was six years old, an Indian Agent told his father that he must send his children to the residential school. Despite his father’s initial refusal, Clayton was sent to the residential school in Lebret. In the three years that Clayton was forced to stay at the residential school, he learned only how to hate and how to be afraid of people. When he was 15 years old he started drinking and he drank for 27 years. Alcohol caused him to do things which kept him in and out of jail.

By 1986, he had joined an AA program and quit drinking. He began to accept authority and the people he worked with when he learned that he was needed. Knowing this made him comfortable to disclose his experience at residential schools and allowed him to hold his job at the City of Regina for 33 years. Since retiring, he works at the Regina Correctional Centre and makes a difference by talking with inmates, giving them advice, and sharing relatable stories from his own experiences. He uses traditional values like the pipe and smudge – he makes his own tobacco and knows how to pick a few medicines.

Indigenous Social Work at First Nations University of Canada

Gilbert Kewistep educates future generations of social workers who, he hopes will, ask tough questions, be inclusive of Elders, be involved in community agencies, and effect meaningful change.

Gilbert Kewistep is a Professor in the Saskatchewan Indigenous Social Work program at First Nations University of Canada. He believes that in order for his students to be successful in their role as social workers they must understand their culture and history of Indigenous people in this province and country. We must educate the current and future Indigenous social workers, and the Canadian public about the effects of residential schools, reconciliation, and the sixties scoop. He hopes that with the knowledge his student’s gain from the program and with guidance from Elders, that they will effect positive change for Indigenous people through social work.
