To teach culture, history and music. To have access to what could be considered a privilege offered at the library, pow-wow grounds, school settings and at the band office, throughout the year. All community members can access the programs, in and around the City of Greater Sudbury. Mary also offers translation services as well. Mary has a four year project offering story knowledge of Creation in partnership with Sudbury Symphony Proponent for Native content in libraries. Where there is a designated section.

Iqaluit Music Society – Access to Music Education

The Iqaluit Music Society creates access to music education through various music camps that include Inuit traditional music as well as contemporary music education.

Darlene Nuqingaq has been a long time educator and member of the Iqaluit Music Society. Here, she talks about the society’s work in creating access to music education through various music camps that include Inuit traditional music as well as contemporary music education. The society’s goal is to provide music education opportunities to all who desire it. Some participants in these programs have moved on to become teachers in the camps themselves.

Qikiqtani Inuit Association

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association communicates with the communities in the Qikiqtani region of Nunavut to mentor them in designing Inuit, cultural youth programs.

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association helps Inuit define their identity along with providing authentic Inuit cultural activities. The organization also helps Inuit reconcile with certain groups that colonized them.

SD 73 – Traditional Ecological Knowledge – Brenda Celesta

SD 73, Brenda and the students take up a challenge of learning, teaching and building a canoe out of Cottonwood.

For thousands of years the Secwepemc peoples would build canoes for travel. However everything the ancestors did in the past was utilized as a teaching tool, whether it was sewing together a basket or preparing food it was used to tell or teach a lesson. Brenda Celesta an employee of school district number 73 of Kamloops bc. knew this fact and used the building of a canoe to cross curricular the curriculum and some life lessons.

Canadian Roots Exchange (CRE) is an active youth organization with a mission to strengthen relationships between Indigenous & non-Indigenous youth by facilitating dialogue through leadership programs, exchanges, national gatherings, and workshops. They run national programming and develop teams in major cities across the country that work on reconciliation projects and bridging the gaps between our differing cultures.

Akwesahsne Freedom School

First Nations led education in community

The Akwesahsne Freedom School was started in 1979 by parents in the Mohawk community that saw a need to preserve their ways and play an active role in the education of the nation starting with the children. They wanted their kids to be educated in the language, to be raised with ceremony and culture on the land of their ancestors without the influence and interference of the Western world. This approach has lead to results such as an increase in speakers of Mohawk language, rejuvenation of cultural strength and familiarity, and the continuance of inter-generational hands on learning.
